GETTING STARTED IN THE
APPRAISAL BUSINESS

Those who are new to the real estate appraisal business may work under the supervision of a licensed or certified appraiser if they obtain an Apprentice Permit. Only 75 hours of class time is required and there is no state examination required. Successfully completing the following courses will provide the foundation necessary to actually begin doing appraisals with proper supervision.

  • Basic Appraisal Principles

  • Basic Appraisal Procedures

  • National USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice)

With sufficient experience and course work, examinations can be taken to become a licensed or certified appraiser. Experience can be gained by working for a licensed or certified appraiser.

The Appraiser Qualifications Board of The Appraisal Foundation has set the following minimum criteria for state licensed and certified appraisers. New Jersey has adopted these recommendations.
